Each of the players can be a human player, the Mac or a net player. A net player can either be a remote human player or a remote Mac. You can play abalone almost any way you can think of, for example: - solitaire against your Mac - a three-player network game - in 'demo' mode (Mac vs. Mac [vs. Mac]) - in 'Turing Test' mode: try to guess which of the two net players is the remote human player, and which the Power Macintosh 9100/200. Changes since version 1.1: - Native on Power Macintoshes. - Added network play option. - recoded my favourite strategy in assembly. - nicer graphics for color Mac owners. - minor bug fixes. Requirements: Any Mac running System 7.x (6.x won't do), min. 200k free RAM. (two of these Macs and some cabling for network play.) For those who don't know about Abalone: Abalone is a board game for two (usually) or more players. The original game is played on a nice-looking hexagonal board with coloured marbles on it. The object of the game is to push off your opponents marbles, much like a sumo wrestler tries to push his opponent out of the ring. You may only push your opponents marbles in a certain direction if you are 'stronger', that is you have more marbles lined up. A number of bug fixes in the final version pertain to the BlueWave setup and to T2 (1.0.1 is included in the archive). T2 now works correctly on the SE/30, imports messages automatically, and supports message bases of up to 8MB. Integration with the freeware mailer "Charon" and the decompression utility "ZipIt" has been greatly simplified for Macintosh FidoNet point setups. Alice can function either as an offline .QWK, .XRS, or BlueWave FidoNet mail reader, or Alice may be combined with Charon and ZipIt to form a seamless FidoNet point setup for the Macintosh platform. How about a way to check whether your files have changed over time without you knowing it? Here is Checksum for the Macintosh, version 1.1.1. Checksum is the ultimate Macintosh application for calculating checksums for a file. This utility is fully compatible with the Unix(tm) "sum" program (and the POSIX "cksum" program), and the RSA MD5. It can be used to verify that files transferred between machines match. It is even smart enough to translate end-of-line characters between Unix, MS-DOS and Macintosh 'TEXT' files. Checksum is the easiest way to compare files on the Macintosh, either on the same system or on different machines. You can even use it to compare performance of different systems. Fully System 7 and 32-bit addressing compatible, including balloon help and "drag and drop" capability. It will run under either System 6 or System 7 on a Mac Plus or higher, including the new PowerMacs. This version 1.1.1 maintenance release corrects two very minor bugs related to preferences. Checksum is business-ware: it is freeware for personal use on a single CPU and for educational institutions for instructional uses, but it is shareware ($5) for use in a business, corporation, organization or government. Site license information is also included. This file can be distributed in software collections, such as CD-ROMs and on-line systems. Enhanced is a science fiction text adventure set in a cyberpunk environment, complete with your first opportunity to experience cyberspace. As Enhanced begins, you are trying to survive yet another day in the big city with no money, no job and no hope. Walking down the street in the government research project area, you suddenly see a sign that you haven't seen before. "Volunteers needed for military research project! Do you want to make money? Do you want to help your country? Can you start at once? No special skills needed. Enter here." Since you think that all of the items on the list fit you perfectly, especially the part about needing money, you enter the door indicated on the sign and sign up to be a research subject. You have to fill out and sign a multitude of forms, asking you about all sorts of things from what grades you had in school to if you have any friends or relatives who know where you are. Once you finish all the boring paperwork you are lead through a lot of white-painted corridors, all alike. Finally, you emerge in what looks like a surgery. You are made to lie down on an operating table where you are tied down and covered with green cloth. You see a plastic mouthpiece being lowered down over your mouth and you feel yourself floating away... When you come to, you find that some things about you have changed. You also find that the people doing the research seem to regard you as some kind of prototype, not a human being. Perhaps it would be good for your health if you could get out of this mess... Improved handling of 'enter' and 'tab' key input in spread sheets. Improved compatibility with two-byte characters (Japanese, etc). Known bugs: * A True Type version of Times must be available for the manual to be displayed correctly. * The cells in a Query spread sheet can be edited, but changes will be lost. (This is an 'intentional' bug -- maybe you want to edit the values a little before you select them and paste them into a spread sheet or word processing application.) * Deleting tuples is done using a spread sheet interface -- a better interface will be provided in the next version. * The manual is too technically oriented. I will try to improve the manual as soon as I have some free time...! Future plans: I have a lot of suggestions and requests for improvements, as well as some ideas of my own. Introduction This file is an overview of the Symantec C++ 7.0.2 update, detailing the various update options available to you. Which archive you need depends on which product you're updating: Symantec C++ for Macintosh We have packaged the update in different ways to limit the number of extraneous components you need to download. There are two archives available: 1) SC++ 7.0.2 Update.sea This is the full update, including patches for the THINK Project Manager, THINK Debugger, the translators, the runtime libraries (these four components are collectively called the "Essential Development Set"), Visual Architect, VA Macro Files, and THINK Class Library. 2) EDS 7.0.2 Update.sea This contains just the "Essential Development Set" update. It does *not* include the VA or TCL updates. If you used the 6.0.x => 7.0 online update to come up to version 7.0 or if you have the full 7.0 product but don't use the Visual Architect or the THINK Class Library then you only need to download this package. Symantec C++ for MPW SC/SCpp 7.0.2 Update.sea This contains patches for both the SC and SCpp compilers. Symantec C++ for Power Macintosh CDK CDK 7.0.2 Update.sea This contains a patch for the PowerPC C++ translator which brings it in line with the 68K 7.0.2 release. We recommend installing the full Symantec C++ for Macintosh 7.0.2 update in addition to this patch so that you will get the latest version of the TCL. A Note About Version Numbers All components except the C++ compilers are version 7.0.1. Pre-release versions of the 7.0.1 C++ compiler were included on the Symantec Developers Advantage CD. The compiler underwent a couple of minor modifications after the CD was mastered and the version number bumped to 7.0.2. As such this patch is called the 7.0.2 update. The next patch release will use a consistent version number across all components. The C++ compiler patches included in the above archives will update either the 7.0 or pre-release 7.0.1 compilers. Had two perfectly functioning GeoPorts, but they were the old type that were defective in manufacturing. 2. While Apple was willing to do an open swap, I had the two old Geoports replaced with new units. (The ones with the nice little dot.) 3. Immediately, after replacing the old for the new Geoports, my AppleLink software running on a Quadra 840av reported connections to AppleLink at 14.4 kbps instead of 9.6 kbps as it reported on the old Geoport. 4. A one after installation, the new Geoport began making a loud, humming noise whenever I attempted to use fax. Of course, this really fouled up the fax and modem connections. 5. Replaced the new Geoport with a second, new Geoport. Now the buzzing is gone, but AppleLink now reports connects at 9.6 kbps again. Go figure! Users have found a potential problem with backing up and restoring a Newton MessagePad with archived apps. This message details the problem. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- here's the scoop on Newtcase 0.9 beta and backing up.. NewtCased applications are "hidden" from the Newton. Therefore, they will NOT be backed up if you make a backup. Think of NewtCased apps as being physically removed from the Newt, except that you do not have to hook up to a PC to get them back. However, because the NewtCase soup (and its list of NewtCased apps) WILL be backed up, a restore will definitely confuse NewtCase as to what exists and what doesn't (the list would be restored, but the actual apps would not). Synchronizing with the Connection kit does not seem to be a problem, because it does not try to restore items that are "missing" from or different on the Newt. The current beta version of NewtCase is not prepared to handle the exception of a NewtCase soup that does not agree with the actual apps installed. Therefore, if you restore your Newt (and an old NewtCase soup with it), use a soup utility to delete the NewtCase soup from the affected store (ie; the internal or the card). The list of NewtCased apps is stored on the same store as the app, so restoring a Newton alone will have no effect on NewtCased apps on a card. Most users will be using NewtCase to archive apps installed on a storage card (this is how it was intended). A backup or restore to the Newton device (no storage card installed) will leave the informatin on the card (and thus, any NewtCased apps on the card) intact. Bottom line: Applications in your NewtCase are "not" installed on your Newt, therefore they will not be backed up. Hope this explanation helps.. Dan Rowley, author of NewtCase Innovative Computer Solutions A sidebar: THIS APPLICATION IS STILL A BETA! No, we don't expect it to fail - we've used it more than we care to discuss.. That was, basically, the question my boss made me, regarding plans to do a large purchase of computing equipment for our campus. He is practically sold on the idea of forgetting the DOS world, and purchasing exclusively PowerMacs, but there are a couple of questions remaining: * Do we have to buy something extra for networking ? (Correct me if I'm wrong, but the PowerMacs have ethernet built-in; you only buy the transceiver appropiate for your cabling setup). * Do most popular DOS programs run without problems on the DOS emulator ? * Can you have access to Novell network services (fileservers, BTrieve applications, etc.) that are currently being run on DOS machines ? This would include locally developed network applications that run on our Novell servers. * Are the machines (6100, 7100, 8100) as reliable and trusty as the DOS machines ? In other words, can they take a licking and keep on ticking ? Your comments, tips, war stories, etc., will be greatly appreciated. J. Yes, I know there is the "Scriptable Text Editor" which - stuff deleted - >larger than 32k. What other editors/word processors are around which >allow this? Does anyone know if Word 6.0 will support scripting? I handle all the microcomputers in the Office of Admissions at the University of Minnesota. We use Microsoft Word for word processing. I looked around for a long time when I needed some scriptability in a word processor for some automatic report/letter production (serious scriptability in a serious word processor!). What I found was WordPerfect 3.x. It is fantastic - you can script almost ANYthing. What you can't script you can write a macro for using its very nice macro language - then you can call the macro from your AppleScript! I highly recommend it. Microsoft Word 6.0 appears to be "not an option" for us as some of our machines still have only 4MB of RAM and it sounds like 6.0 is going to need more than 3MB (I'm not sure if it'll be scriptable).
